This week we are pleased to welcome Dr. Dorret Boomsma and Nikki Hubers, a professor and a PhD student at Vrije Universiteit, presenting for us on Friday, April 4th, 2025. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The presentation title is: "What we currently know about human twinning and its relation to fertility"
Speaker Bio: Prof. Dr. Dorret Boomsma is a twin researcher and quantitative geneticist at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam. She is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities and the Academia Europaea. In 2022 she became doctor honoris causa at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, Finland. In the 1980’s, she founded the Netherlands Twin Register (NTR) together with Professor Orlebeke, which formed the foundation for her research into the etiology of population variation in human complex traits and led to numerous publications and over 70 PhD dissertations under her supervision Her work has led to national and international recognition, including the Spinoza Prize which is the highest scientific award in the Netherlands. She initiated and participates in multiple twin- and GWAS consortia.
Nikki Hubers is a PhD student of Prof. Boomsma at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has a background in biomedical sciences and behavioral genetics. Her PhD focuses on the aetiology of twinning and she studies the relationship between dizygotic (DZ) twinning and fertility, through genetically based methods such as genetic correlations and polygenic scores. Another important aspect of her research is translating genetic findings into biological insights by studying and integrating multiple omics data, including epigenomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics.
