We are happy to have with us Lucas Alcantara, a PhD candidate at the University of Guelph, to present a CGIL Seminar on Friday April 29th, 2022. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The title of the presentation is: "Building a machine learning model to identify text-based breeding protocol descriptions of hormonal synchronization protocols".

Connection information for the meeting has been sent via a Calendar invitation, additionally the meeting can be found at the link below.

Speaker Biography:

Lucas obtained his Bachelor’s in Biotechnology and a Master’s in Biosciences, both from the Federal University of Bahia, Brazil. As a master’s student, he studied the role of different bacteria from the rumen in the degradation of plant cell-wall through bioinformatics analysis aiming for species with the potential to produce enzymes of industrial interest. Lucas is currently a Ph.D. candidate from CGIL under the supervision of Dr. Flavio Schenkel and Dr. Christine Baes, and he has been leveraging data-driven algorithms to provide information and solutions for different areas in the dairy industry. This week he will talk about his work to provide a methodology to develop classification models aiming to identify text-based breeding protocol descriptions of hormonal synchronization protocols and how this will help researchers to further understand the effects of Timed AI on genetic evaluations for fertility traits. In addition to his Ph.D. studies, he currently works part-time at the OMAFRA Elora/Ponsonby Livestock Research Centres as a Livestock Data Technician.
