Speaker Biography:

Michael Ling is a master’s by coursework student under the supervision of Dr. Niel Karrow. He completed his Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Biology (Honours) in 2021 where he developed a strong interest in animal health and immunogenetics. Although his final project has yet to commence, it involves identifying changes in the expression of circulatory microRNAs (miRNAs) post bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge in young dairy calves. He is originally from Mississauga, but from a young age has spent most of his time working on horse farms where he developed a passion for animals, their health, and equine breeding.

Christiana obtained a Bachelor’s of Technology degree in Animal Production from the Federal University of Technology Minna in 2017. Through her undergraduate studies, she developed a background in sustainable livestock production and nutrition, with an emphasis on alternative feedstuffs/nutrient sources for broiler chickens. In 2019, she was awarded the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Scholarship to study in the European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EMABG) program at Georg-August Universität Göttingen, Germany and Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Norway. Her master’s degree thesis was on Modeling Feed Intake and Feed Efficiency along the Lactation Curve of Norwegian Red Dairy Cattle. Christiana is currently a PhD student in the Center for Genetic Improvement of Livestock under the supervision of Dr. Christine Baes. She works on the Resilient Dairy Genome Project to understand the impacts of genomic selection on the Canadian dairy cattle population structure.
