We are very pleased to have Dr. Aroa Suárez-Vega, an assistant professor at the University of León (Spain), presenting a CGIL Seminar on Friday February 26th, 2021. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The title of the presentation is: “Using Genomics to Identify Deleterious Alleles Associated to Sheep Mendelian Disorders”.

Speaker Biography:
Dr. Aroa Suárez-Vega is an assistant professor at the University of León (Spain) in the Department of Animal Production. After growing up close to the rural world at her grandparents' farm in Asturias, Suárez-Vega decided to undertake a B.Sc. in Veterinary Science at the University of León. She earned her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Genetics at the same university receiving the Outstanding Doctoral Award in Health Sciences. During her Ph.D., Suarez-Vega pursued her interest in the field of OMIC technologies by taking several international specialization courses and completing two stays at the INRA research center (France). From January 2018 to December 2019, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Animal Bioscience at the University of Guelph, under the supervision of Dr. Ángela Cánovas. At the moment, her research program is focused on the application and analysis of OMIC technologies for the characterization of the genetic basis of economically important traits in Spanish sheep breeds. Suárez-Vega has published just over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She is currently involved in two Spanish national projects and the Smarter European-funded project and she is the supervisor of two undergraduate and two Ph.D. students. In addition, she teaches genetics, animal breeding, bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics, and molecular techniques applied to animal breeding within the Veterinary and Biotechnology programs at the University of León, and she teaches annually in national and international courses of specialization in bioinformatics.
