We are very pleased to have Dr. Gerson Oliveira, a Post-Doctoral Researcher in the Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock present a CGIL Seminar on Friday October 16thThe seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The title of the presentation is: “Genome and Chromosomal Partitioning of Genetic Parameters in Canadian Holstein Bulls”.

Speaker Biography:

Dr. Gerson Oliveira has a veterinary degree from the Federal University of Uberlândia, Brazil. During his undergraduate program, he worked for four years visiting and learning the needs of various dairy farms in Brazil. After graduating from his undergraduate program, he spent a year and a half as a veterinarian, working in the areas of reproduction, health, and management of livestock farms. He then decided to go back to school and pursued a M.Sc. at the University of São Paulo, with a project focused on the use of phantom parents. Following his M.Sc., he was began a Ph.D. position on a project entitled “Genomic improvement of fertilization traits in Danish and Brazilian cattle”. During his Ph.D. he had the opportunity to study for one year at Iowa State University under Dr. Dorian Garrick, and spent one month at the University of Copenhagen working with Dr. Haja Kadarmideen. Upon the completion of his Ph.D., he obtained a position with CRV Brazil, working as a Genomic Supervisor for almost two years. Currently, Dr. Oliveira is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Guelph working with Dr. Christine Baes, where he is responsible for the Dairy Research Cluster project entitled “Understanding the impact of cutting-edge genomic technologies and novel phenotypes on breeding strategies for optimum sustainable genetic progress in Canadian dairy cattle”
