Objective

The objective of the present course is to introduce the students to the basic principles and methods for QTL mapping. This will be accomplished by guiding the students through the basic procedures that are being used at the University of Liège to map QTL for milk production in cattle. The presented methods therefore focus mainly on outbred half-sib pedigrees.

The course is organized in theoretical sessions which will be given in the morning and practical sessions in the afternoon. The morning sessions will highlight the theoretical basis of the methods and procedures that will be utilized in the afternoon. Practical sessions will introduce the students to (I) the interpretation of microsatellite markers, (ii) the construction of linkage and radiation hybrid maps using ANIMAP, CRIMAP and RHMAP, (iii) QTL mapping using HSQM.
